Most medical terms can be broken into three components. What are they?
Prefix, Root, & Suffix
(Not all roots are complete words and some words have more than one root. In fact, most medical roots are derived from other languages and are meant to be used in combinations.)
What do you call a word that has more than one root?
A compound word (KOM-pownd)
Some examples of compound medical words are cardiovascular (pertaining to the heart and blood vessels), urogenital (pertaining to the urinary and reproductive systems), and lymphocyte (a white blood cell found in the lymphatic system).
What is a combining form? (kom-BI-ning)
A word root combined with a vowel that links the root with another word part, such as a suffix or another root; combining forms are shown with a slash between the root and the vowel, as in neur/o
Example: neur + o + logy = neurology
What do you do when you add a suffix to a word ending in x?
The x is changed to a g or a c.
For example, pharynx (throat) becomes pharyngeal; coccyx becomes coccygeal.
If a vowel comes before the x, such as ax or ix, you change the x to a c. Thorax becomes thoracic and cervix becomes cervical
What happens when you add a suffix beginning with rh to a root?
The r is doubled.
For example: hem/o (blood) + rhage (bursting forth) = hemorrhage (a bursting forth of blood)
How do you pronounce vowels that appears alone or at the end of a syllable?
They get a long pronunciation (they says their name) and are called long vowels.
Examples: A in tape, E in tea, I in lie, O in most, U in mute.
