Med Surg I Respiratory Terms Flashcards
Pharynx
the chamber that joins nasal and oral cavities to the esophagus and larynx: part of respiration and digestion
Alveoli
one of the furthest structures in the lungs where oxygen and carbon monoxide exchange; elastic balloon-like structures that help with exhalation
Bronchial breath sounds
heard over large airways (trachea and larynx) and should be relatively easy to hear (sounds like blowing through a paper towel core)
Vesicular breath sounds
May be heard over the smaller airways (bronchioles and alveoli) and are not typically as loud as those heard in the bronchial areas; air filling the smaller, more distal parts of the lungs as compared to the large airways of bronchial breath sounds
adventitious lung sounds
abnormal: crackle, wheeze, rhonchus, pleural friction rub
vary in: pitch, intensity, duration, phase of the respiratory cycle
atelectasis
when a lung collapses either completely or partially causing reduced or no air exchange in that lung
Dyspnea
Shortness of breath
Peak expiratory flow
The maximum rate a person can exhale
Hypoxemia
Low blood oxygen: can cause SOB
Pleura
Serous membrane that wraps the lungs and lines the chest cavity (serous membranes are smooth with cells that secrete serous fluid for lubrication)
