When should child resistant containers be used?

A

• If item isn’t dispensed in manufacture’s original packaging

• for supplying all solid, all oral abd external liquid dose preparations unless other reason eg:
- specific request (poor manual dexterity)
- original pack (desiccant in lid like silica gel)

• ‘Keep medicines out of sight and reach of children’

What are the HMRs Requirements relating to child safety?

A

As part of HMRs, ‘regulated medicinal products’ must only be supplied in containers which are:
- Opaque or dark tinted and
- child- resistant

A

A medicinal product containing aspirin, paracetamol or >24mg of elemental iron

What are the exemptions for child resistant containers?

A

Regulations font apply where supply carried out:

• by or under supervision of pharmacist and in a registered pharmacy, and either:
- where it is not reasonably practical
- at the request of patient (>16yrs) eg due to poor manual dexterity
• By doctor or dentist directly to a patient (or patients carer)
• by doctor or dentist to an appropriate practitioner for administration to patient
• in hospital or health centre
