When should child resistant containers be used?
• If item isn’t dispensed in manufacture’s original packaging
• for supplying all solid, all oral abd external liquid dose preparations unless other reason eg:
- specific request (poor manual dexterity)
- original pack (desiccant in lid like silica gel)
• ‘Keep medicines out of sight and reach of children’
What are the HMRs Requirements relating to child safety?
As part of HMRs, ‘regulated medicinal products’ must only be supplied in containers which are:
- Opaque or dark tinted and
- child- resistant
What is a ‘regulated medicinal product’?
A medicinal product containing aspirin, paracetamol or >24mg of elemental iron
(has exceptions)
What are the exemptions for child resistant containers?
Regulations font apply where supply carried out:
• by or under supervision of pharmacist and in a registered pharmacy, and either:
- where it is not reasonably practical
- at the request of patient (>16yrs) eg due to poor manual dexterity
• By doctor or dentist directly to a patient (or patients carer)
• by doctor or dentist to an appropriate practitioner for administration to patient
• in hospital or health centre
For cough and cold remedies, what are the following used for:

Cough and cold medicines are second line to ‘best practice’ what is this?
best practice is first line treatment/advice
What are the considerations for collection of medicine by children?
• decide to supply on a case by case basis
- knowledge of child
- maturity of child
- nature of medicines supplied
- prior arrangement
- reason for collection
- counselling
- local policies
- proof of identity
What are medicine owings?
Sometimes full quantity of medicine required on prescription not in stock- ‘owe’ medicines
What are the validity of owings on NHS and private prescriptions ?
• POMs and sched 5 CDs: 6 months from appropriate date
• P and GSL: 6 months from appropriate date
• Sched 2, 3, 4 CDs: 28 days after appropriate date
The description pharmacy may legally only be used by:
a) a registered pharmacy or
b) the pharmaceutical department of a hospital or health care
