What are the types of prescriptions for POMs?
• NHS
- covered by HMR 2012 and additional NHS regulations
What are the prescription requirements?
• Signature of prescriber
• Date
• Particulars of prescriber
• Address of prescriber
• Patient name
• Patient address
• Age
POM can only be sold or supplied from prescription from appropriate practitioner. Who are these?
• Medical prescribers:
- Doctors
• Non medical prescribers:
- Nurses/pharmacists/allied health
- professionals (supplementary or independent prescribers)
- Dentists
- Optometrist
- Paramedics
How can independent prescribers prescribe?
Can prescribe any POM within their own competence and expertise
How can supplementary prescribers prescribe?
Can prescribe any POM within an agreed clinical management plan (CMP)
Can NHS prescriptions be a single hand written sheet?
yes
Most prescriptions are electronic, but there are some exemptions what are they
• locum doctors
• across country dispensing
• some prescribers don’t use electronic system
What colour are FP10 prescriptions and who can they be prescribed by?
• green
• used by doctors, independent prescribers and supplementary prescribers
• can also be used by nurse independent prescribers and pharmacist supplementary prescriber but this must be stated
What is the electronic prescription service ? (EPS)
• allows prescriptions to be sent from Gp surgeries directly to a pharmacy of the patients choosing
• prescriptions uploaded to NHS Spine- smartcard access required to download
- prescriptions printed at pharmacy
• aka electronic transfer of prescriptions (ETP)
What colour is FP10 D prescription and who can it be prescribed by?
• Yellow
• Dental prescription
• Dentists can prescribe from a limited list on NHS (found in dental practitioner formulary)
What colour is FP10 P prescription and who can prescribe it?
• purple
• community practitioner nurse prescribers
• prescribe from limited list of medicines in nurse prescribers formulary
• List doesnt apply to IP and SP nurses
What colour is FP10 MDA and what is it used for?
• Light blue
• for certain controlled drugs for addiction treatment eg methadone
• limited to max of 14 day supply
• instructs pharmacy when to dispense medication
What colour are Hospital out-patient prescriptions and how are they used?
• white
• only to be dispensed at that hospitals pharmacy only
• hospital docs can also prescribe on FP10 for any community pharmacy
• payment included within hospital budget (prescription dispensed and retained by hospital)
How are NHS prescription forms protected?
• serial numbers
• UV markings
• micro fine printing
• pastel backgrounds (to deter photocopying)
• important to gave electronic back up
What are the exemptions from NHS prescription charges?
• Age <16 and >60
• Age 16-18 and in full time education
• range of exemption certificates (based on certain medical conditions)
• receiving state benefits
• patients receiving no-charge contraceptives
What is prescription endorsements and how does it work
• they are ‘endorsed’ once dispensed, this is necessary for correct reimbursement (ie payment for medicines dispensed)
• Prescriptions to be stamped with pharmacy address
• Sent to NHS business service authority (NHS BSA) at end of calendar month for pricing
• electronic prescriptions are endorsed and submitted electronically
