MECHANISM OF SWALLOWING Flashcards
Complex reflex mechanism by which food is pushed from oral cavity to the stomach
Swallowing
3 phases of swallowing
Oral, pharyngeal and oesophageal
Breakdown of food’s complex molecules into chemical molecules
Digestion
Uptake of digested products from the GI tract into blood
Absorption
Excretion of indigestible products from blood
Excretion
Food is chewed and segmented including mastication
Mechanical breakdown
How many muscles are involved in swallowing
20 muscles
Voluntary phase
Oral phase
Involuntary phase
Pharyngeal phase and Oesophageal phase
How is food prevented from going back to the oral cavity after swallowing?
The tongue blocks the oral cavity
How is food prevented from going into the nasopharynx
The soft palate and uvula elevates and blocks the nasipharynx
How is food prevented from getting into the air passage(Larynx)
The epiglottis closes off the larynx
Nerves involved in oral phase
Glossopharyngeal nerve
Nerves involved in pharyngeal phase
Trigeminal nerve5, facial7, glossopharyngeal9, vagus10, accessory11 and hypoglossal12
Movement of bolus through oesophagus
Peristalsis
