Mechanical Function Motion Transmission Systems Flashcards
Motion transmission system
A set of components that perform the function of transmitting motion, example rotation, to rotation
Driver
The component that receives the function that activates the system
driven
The component that receives the motion from the driver
Intermediate component
The component located between the driver, and the driven not all systems contain one
Reversibility
A system is reversible when the driven can become the driver and vice versa
Gear rotation formula
gr=DR/DV= #DRteeth/#DVteeth
Gear train
- gears rotate opposite of each other
-reversible
-identical - teeth must mesh perfectly
- closely position
- same size + shape
Chain and sprocket
-gears inside sprocket rotate in same direction
-reversible
-2 or more gears and sprocket
-Gears match with chain
-Distant parts
-Teeth must be identical, same size same shape
Worm and worm gear
- Gears rotate varies with the angle of the threads
-nonreversible
-groove of the worm must mesh with the worm gear
-Slows down the system a lot
Friction gear system
- Gears rotate opposite of each other
- reversible
- gears are toothless
-A ton of friction between gears
-More expensive(economical)
-Inefficient compared to gears
belt and pulley
- inside belt, gears rotate the same direction
- reversible
- toothless gears with grooves
-smooth groove to not damage belt - distant parts
-The belt must adhere to the groove
-The smaller, the pulley the faster
