Mechanical Function Motion Transformation Systems Flashcards
1
Q
Motion transformation
A
The mechanical function of relaying motion from one part to another well altering the nature of the motion
2
Q
types of motion, transformation systems
A
1) rack and pinion
2) screw gear type one
3) screw gear type two
4) cam and follower
5) slider crank mechanism
3
Q
Rack and pinion
A
- Rotational to translational movement
- Reversible
- Teeth must be same shape, same size (identical)
- Frequent lubrication prevent wear and tear
4
Q
Screw gear type one
A
- car jack
- Rotational to translational
-Nonreversible - Crank rotates
- Jack translates
- Threads of the screw must mesh with the nut
- The nut must be connected so it cannot rotate
5
Q
screw gear type two
A
-Example wrench
- Nonreversible
- Translational to rotational
- threads of the screw + nut must mesh
-The nut is fixed so that it can only rotate
6
Q
Cameron follower
A
- example, sewing machine needle
-Nonreversible
-Rotation to translation - cam rotates follower translates
-shape of the cam determines the motion(how the follower moves)
-May or may not contain a spring
7
Q
Slider crank
A
-example train
-Rotation to translation
-Reversible
- Internal combustion engine, frequent lubrication
