A list of life events that can occur in a persons life. The scale assigns a value to the level of stress that event reflects.

- Marriage given an arbitrary rating of 50
- Each event was to be judged as more or less readjustment

- Correlation was high in all groups except for black and white people
Conclusions of Holmes and Rahe
Degree of similarity between groups shows agreement in general of what constitutes a life event and how much they cause stress
