Measuring: Biological (GSR) - Geer & Maisel Flashcards
1
Q
Aim of Geer & Maisel
A
Lab experiment in which participants were shown dead car crash victims. Stress levels measure through galvanic skin response and heart rate through EEG machines
2
Q
Participants of Geer & Maisel
A
60 undergraduates doing psychology at NYU
3
Q
Design of Geer & Maisel
A
Independent measures design. Random allocation to 1 of 3 conditions.
4
Q
Measures of Geer & Maisel
A
- GSR involves placing finger grips that contain moisture sensors on the end of fingers. Measures changes in moisture levels.
- Baseline was taken to assess a change in moisture
- When participant saw the image level f moisture was measures and recorded
5
Q
Procedure of Geer & Maisel
A
- Each participant in a soundproofed room and wired up to GSR and EEG machines. Calibrated for 5 minutes to get baseline
- Instructions read over intercom
- Each photo was up for 35 seconds ( except for Group 1)
- GSR was taken at the onset of the tone and during the second half of the tone and in response to the picture
6
Q
Results of Geer & Maisel
A
EEG recordings were discarded
Group 3 showed most stress Group 1 least
7
Q
Conclusions of Geer & Maisel
A
Having control over your environment can reduce stress responses
