Measuring Capacity Of The Lungs Flashcards
What are the 3 methods of measurement?
- Peak flow meter
- Vitalograph
- Spirometer
What is a peak flow meter?
Measures rate at which air can be expelled from lungs. Often used by people with asthma to monitor their lung health
What is a vitalograph?
More sophisticated version of a peak flow meter. Patient breathes out as quickly as possible through a mouthpiece.
It makes a graph of the forced expiratory volume and how quickly it is breathed out
What is a spirometer?
Used to measure different aspects of lung volume/investigate breathing patterns.
Made of a submurged chamber that tises and fslls with exhales and inales
Tidal volume?
Volume of air that moves in and out of lungs with each resting breath. Aprox 500cm3 (15% of vital capacity)
Vital capacity
The largest possible exhale after the largest possible inhalation
Inspiratory reserve volume
Max volume of air you can breath in, over and above normal inhalation
Expiratory reserve volume
Extra amount of air you can force out of your lungs over and above normal tidal volume you breathe out
Residual volume
Volume of air that is left in your lungs after you have exhaled as hard as possible. Cant be directly measured
What precautions are taken when using a spirometer?
Canister of soda lime to dissolve co2 produced
Nose clip so all air breathed in is from the spirometer and all co2 breathed out goes into spirometer
