Measures of Consciousness Flashcards
What does D.A.R.E mean?
detects, amplifies and records the electrical activity
What is an EEG?
Electroencephalograph
= detects, amplifies and records the electrical activity of the brain
What is an EMG?
Electromyograph
= detects, amplifies and records the electrical activity of the skeletal muscles
What is an EOG?
Electro-oculargraph
= detects, amplifies and records the electrical activity of the muscles surrounding the eyes
What kind of graph measures the muscles around the eyes?
EOG
What kind of graph measures the activity of the brain?
EEG
What kind of graph measures the activity of the skeletal muscles?
EMG
What are the measures of speed and accuracy on cognitive tests?
requires a participant to respond to a visual stimulus and measure their speed and accuracy
What is speed?
refers to the response time to the stimulus
What is accuracy?
refers to the number of correct responses
What type of measure is speed and accuracy on cognitive tests?
Objective
= scores are measured numerically
What is subjective reporting?
involves the use of self reports where a participant responds to questions
What is a common type of self report?
sleep diary
Why is a sleep diary considered to be subjective?
individual response and can be bias
What is a self report and sleep diary?
involves individual keeping a record of their own subjective experiences
- sleep diary is a self report of someone’s individual sleeping and waking times
What are the advantages of self reports?
provides insight to thoughts that cannot be directly measured
What are the disadvantages of self reports?
results are highly subjective
- people may be dishonest + bias
What is video monitoring?
uses cameras to often record people when they are asleep and tracks their movement and sleep disturbances etc
What is an advantage of video monitoring?
many people can interpret it
good for observations of sleep behaviours
What is a disadvantage of video monitoring?
is time consuming
results can be subjective = different interpretations
artificial environment
What are the different methods of measuring consciousness?
EEG
EOG
EMG
Video monitoring
Subjective reporting - self reports and sleep diaries
Measures of speed and accuracy on cognitive tasks
