What does the changes in a psychological state refer to?
states that people experience a number of changes in a psychological state when they are in altered states of consciousness compared to NWC
What are controlled processes?
processes that require mental effort and conscious awareness where the person focuses their attention on completing a particular goal
What are automatic processes?
requires little conscious effort and does not interfere with the performance of attending to other tasks
What does attention mean in terms of automatic and controlled processes?
ability to undertake controlled and automatic processes
What happens in an altered state of consciousness in terms of automatic and controlled processes?
- find it difficult to carry out automatic processes
- divided attention is impaired
- still able to perform controlled processes
= selective attention is fine
What are content limitations?
amount of control that you have to restrict what you attend to
What happens to content limitations in NWC?
content is more limited and restricted
= more organised and logical
- able to prevent yourself from focusing on unpleasant things
What happens to content limitations in altered states of consciousness?
content is less restricted and less limited
- disorganized and illogical
