Measurements Flashcards
Pregnancy haemoglobin levels (g/L)
10-20 g/L lower due to disproportionate rise in plasma and red cell volumes
Newborn haemoglobin levels
145-220 g/L
3-6 months baby haemoglobin levels
110-135 g/L
6-12 years old child haemoglobin levels
115-155 g/L
Male haemoglobin levels
130-170 g/L
Female haemoglobin levels
120-160 g/L
What is mean corpuscular volume?
Mass of haemoglobin per cell (on average)
Microcytic anaemia level?
<80 fl (femto litre, 10^-15 litre)
What is microcytic anaemia?
Reduced MCV in iron deficiency due to chronic blood loss, or due to an inherited haemoglobin abnormality (thalassemia)
Normocytic anaemia is caused by?
- Acute blood loss
- Systemic illness
- Primary bone marrow pathology
Macrocytic anaemia level?
> 100 fL
Causes of macrocytic anaemia?
- Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency
- Haemolysis
- Liver disease
What is mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration?
A measure of the concentration of haemoglobin in a given volume
Three words to describe varying levels of mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration
- Hypochromatic
- Normochromatic
- Hyperchromatic
Reticulocyte count increases in?
Increased in acute haemorrhage, and has reduced RBC life span (due to haemolysis)
