Mean/Median (5) Flashcards
Median
In an even number of terms, its the average of the two middle terms
In an evenly spaced set…
Mean and median will be the same
Sum of all even integers between 2 & 100, inclusive? Exclusive?
Sum of values = average x # of values. Average = 100 + 2 / 2 = 51 # of values = Range (in this case, R/2 bc even only). Add 1 for inclusive, -1 for exclusive.
If given # of values in a problem…
Don’t auto think to plug in range for solving somewhere. You already have that variable!
If all terms of a set are multiplied by a constant…
New average can be derived by multiplying the initial mean by same constant.
With mean problems…be ready to…
Convert between average and sum of values. Whichever they give you, it is usually easier to work with the other
When in doubt
Write it out.
