Data Sufficiency (4) Flashcards
Geometry figures are not nec. drawn to scale, therefore…
Never use a visual approx as your reason for saying a statement is sufficient. Always seek proof.
Remember to consider what type of numbers?
Special case numbers (negatives, nonintegers, 0, numbers nearing infinity) - unless expressly ruled out (but I feel like this never happens)
Algebraic Manipulation
Look to see if you can perform algebra to make a statement look like it does in the question, OR the question look like the statement
Strategy - playing devil’s advocate
Statement seems sufficient, try to find edge cases (special case numbers).
Strategy - leveraging assets
Labelling everything in a diagram, expressing each equation multiple ways via algebra, and questioning any piece of math infor you havent used
Strategy - why are you here
When one statement is fairly obvious, there is usually a reason it is there. Hint to something you should have consided in other statement? Trap to avoid?
When a question asks about a combination…
You can usually solve for the combo itself (3x-y) rather than both x and y. Look to do this.
If an answer seemed to easy in DS…
Spend a bit extra time leveraging assets and/or playing devil’s advocate
No Easy Es
Only pick E if you can prove it
Characteristic of #2
Only even prime number
