ME, MYSELF AND THE OTHERS Flashcards
Self-Concept
A cognitive representation of self-knowledge, including beliefs and self-schemas. It shapes how we view ourselves in relation to others.
Working Self
A subset of self-concept active in any given moment, guiding behavior in that context. It includes the ‘ideal self’ (goals and aspirations) and the ‘ought self’ (responsibilities).
Self-Esteem
An overall evaluation of oneself along a positive-negative dimension. Higher self-esteem leads to greater confidence, while low self-esteem can cause doubt and hesitation.
Self-Regulation
The process of controlling and directing one’s actions to meet goals, based on monitoring behavior and adjusting it when necessary (Cybernetic Theory of Self-Regulation by Carver and Scheier).
Core Self-Evaluations
A stable personality trait involving four dimensions: self-esteem, self-efficacy, locus of control, and emotional stability. This influences decision-making and work-related performance.
Trait vs. State Self-Esteem
Trait self-esteem is a long-term attribute, while state self-esteem fluctuates based on current experiences and contexts.
