GROUP DYNAMICS AND PROSOCIAL BEHAVIOR Flashcards
Social Facilitation
The presence of others improves performance on simple tasks but may impair performance on difficult tasks.
Group Norms
Shared expectations within a group that guide behavior. Norms can be descriptive or prescriptive.
Group Cohesion
The force that binds group members together, driven by shared commitment (task cohesion) and interpersonal attraction (interpersonal cohesion).
Bystander Effect
The phenomenon where individuals are less likely to help in an emergency when others are present due to the diffusion of responsibility.
Pluralistic Ignorance
A situation where individuals mistakenly believe their own opinions differ from the group’s, leading them to conform.
Diffusion of Responsibility
When responsibility is shared among group members, individuals feel less accountable, reducing the likelihood of action.
Audience Inhibition
The reluctance to act in an emergency due to fear of being judged by others.
Prosocial Behavior
Actions intended to benefit others, such as helping, sharing, or comforting.
Altruism vs. Egoism
Helping behavior driven by empathy (altruism) or to reduce personal discomfort (egoism).
Groupthink
A phenomenon where the desire for group harmony suppresses critical thinking, leading to poor decisions.
