acute hyperthermia - can lead to muscle damage and renal failure
increase water intake and retention - increased ADH release causing thirst, increased hydration and hyponatraemia
heart failure - if undiagnosed pre-use
What are the signs and consequences of excessive water intake? (2)
symptoms are dizziness and disorientation before
collapsing into a coma and then death
What are the chronic effects of MDMA? (2)
long term deleted memory
decreased cognitive function
Explain the pharmacology of ecstasy (4)
Taken up by SERT transporter
inhibits VMAT1/2 leading to a build up in cytosol
MDMA activates TAAR1 which results in the transporter removal or reversal
more MDMA ends up in the synaptic cleft
