MDA CH 20 Principles and Techniques of Disinfection Flashcards
What is an antiseptic?
Its a substance that kills microorganisms on the skin.
What’s a bioburden?
It’s blood, saliva, or any other bodily fluids.
What is broad-spectrum activity?
Its the capability of killing a wide rage of microbes.
What is chlorine dioxide?
Its a chemical sterilant or surface disinfectant that is effective and fast-acting on environmental surfaces.
What is a clinical contact surface?
Any surface that is touched with contaminated hands, instruments, or spatter from the dental treatment (e.g. chairside computers, dental light handles).
What is a disinfectant?
A chemical that is used to reduce the amount of microorganisms on an inanimate objects.
What is an environmental surface?
Any surface in a healthcare settling that is not directly involved with patient care, but can become contaminated during treatments and procedures (e.g countertops, floors, walls, instrument control panels).
What is a fungicidal?
Its a product that can kill fungi.
What is glutaraldehyde?
Its an EPA(Environmental Protection Agency) registered high-level disinfectant.
What is greener infection control?
When you minimize the environmental impact of infection control products and procedures.
What is a high-level disinfectant?
Its a hospital disinfectant with tuberculocidal activity.
What is a hospital disinfectant?
Its a disinfectant with the ability to kill Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella choleraesuis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
What is a housekeeping surface?
They are surfaces that aren’t contaminated during treatment (e.g. floors, walls).
What is an immersion disinfectant?
Its a disinfectant used to soak heat-sensitive instruments.
What is a intermediate-level disinfectant?
An EPA-registered liquid disinfectant with tuberculocidal activity (used for disinfecting operatory surfaces).
What is an iodophor?
Its an EPA- registered intermediate-level hospital disinfectant.
What’s a liquid sterilant?
Its a disinfectant that’s used at room temperature for items that are damaged by heat-sterilization.
What is a low-level disinfectant?
Its a disinfectant that destroys certain viruses and fungi; it’s used for general housecleaning (e.g walls, floors).
What is precleaning?
Its when you remove a bioburden before using disinfectants, whether it be soap and water or a disinfectant.
What is residual activity?
It’s the action that continues long after the initial application, as with disinfectants.
What is reuse life?
Its the time period that a disinfectant remains effective during use and reuse.
What is shelf life?
Its how long a product can be stored for before its use.
What are single-use items?
These are items that are used on only one patient and then thrown away (e.g syringes, face masks, surface barriers, examination/procedure gloves etc.).
What is sodium hypochlorite?
It’s a surface disinfectant known as household bleach?
