Maxillary Second Premolar Flashcards
For the maxillary second premolar, what is the age of expected eruption?
10-12 years
For the maxillary second premolar, on the buccal and lingual faces is the occlusocervical crown dimension longer or shorter than the mesiodistal crown?
Longer. The buccal surface is taller than it is wide.
For the maxillary second premolar, what is the crown shape from the facial and lingual views? How does it compare to the max 1st premolar?
Trapezoid or pentagon (more accurately describes the cusp tip). It is shorter, rounder cusp than 1st premolar.
For the maxillary second premolar, which cusp ridge is longer, the distal or mesial?
Distal. This is the same as we saw with the canines but opposite to the max 1st premolar.
For the maxillary second premolar, describe the mesial and distal outlines seen from the buccal/lingual view.
Mesial outline: Convex; mesial cusp is shorter than distal
Distal outline: Convex; distal cusp ridge longer than mesial
For the maxillary second premolar, what are the heights of contour (occlusogingival contact locations) on the mesial and distal faces?
Mesial: Middle 1/3 just below junction with occlusal 1/3
Distal: middle 1/3 just inferior to mesial contact location
For the maxillary second premolar, there is a cusp tip with M-D cusp ridges, connecting the three developmental lobes on the facial side, are there concave notches b/t these developmental lobes as often seen on the maxillary 1st premolar?
Sometimes (present on model teeth, especially on distal side).
For the maxillary second premolar, how do the M-D and O-G distances of the lingual surface compare to those of the facial surface?
They are nearly the same. They are smaller but not by much. The crown of the maxillary second premolar tapers LITTLE to the lingual surface.
For the maxillary second premolar, how many roots are present? Any dilaceration to either the mesial or distal?
There is only one maxillary 2nd premolar root. It curves towards the distal at the apex.
For the maxillary second premolar, what is the crown shape from the occlusal view?
Oval or oblong
For the maxillary second premolar, what is the shape of the occlusal table?
Oval
For the maxillary second premolar, are the mesial and distal fossa relatively close or far away from the center of the occlusal table?
Close, b/c the transverse ridge is thinner than the transverse ridge of the max 1st premolar.
For the maxillary second premolar, describe the facial and lingual outlines as seen from the occlusal view.
Both are convex. The facial middle lobe is prominent on the facial outline.
For the maxillary second premolar, what two ridges meet to form the transverse ridge?
The two triangular ridges from the central facial and lingual cusps.
For the maxillary second premolar, the presence of many supplemental grooves on the occlusal surface is said to give the occlusal surface what type of appearance?
A “wrinkled” appearence. As a general rule the more posterior you go the more supplemental occlusal grooves are present.
