Q

What are the heights of contour (occlusogingival contact location) of the mesial and distal surfaces of molars? What is the one exception?

A

Mesial: Junction of occlusal and middle 1/3s
Distal: Middle 1/3
One exception is the distal height of contour on the mandibular first molar. It is at the junction of the occlusal and middle 1/3s BUT it is still cervical relative to the mesial height of contour.

Q

For the maxillary first molar, of the two buccal cusps, MB and DB, which is taller and wider?

A

The MB cusp is slightly taller and wider than the DB cusp.

Q

For the maxillary first molar, what is the groove called on the buccal surface? How far onto the buccal surface does it extend? What is often found at the end?

A

The buccal groove is found on the buccal surface and extends all the way to the middle 1/3 of the buccal face, often ending in a deep pit.

Q

For all molars, are they longer M-D or O-G?

A

All molars are longer in the M-D dimension, meaning they are longer in the mesial-distal direction than they are tall.

Q

For the maxillary first molar, what lingual cusp is visible from the buccal view?

Q

What 5th, non-developmental root do we find on the lingual surface? What cusp is it found growing off of? Approximately what percentage of people have this ‘fifth’ cusp?

A

The cusp of carabelli grows off of the ML cusp in 70% of people.

Q

For the maxillary first molar, the MB and DB roots are quite spread out allowing visualization of the palatal root from the buccal view. What might be a contributing factor as to why they are so spread out?

A

The buccal furcation is located quite cervically (small root trunk) compared to the buccal furcation of the secondary max molar. This may give the MB and DB roots time to spread out into their classic seperation.

Q

For both maxillary molars, what is the crown shape as seen from the mesial view? What is the wider base as represented by the trapezoid?

A

Trapezoid. The wider base is the cervical base, which tapers to the occlusal surface.

16
Q

For the maxillary first molar, what is the buccal outline as seen from the mesial view?

A

Convex; variable due to cusp of carabelli

17
Q

For all molars, what are the heights of contour of the buccal and lingual surfaces as seen from the proximal view? What is the one possible exception?

A

Buccal: cervical 1/3
Lingual: middle 1/3
One exception is if the cusp of carabelli is present on the maxillary1st molar the height of contour on the lingual surface may be in the occlusal 1/3.

18
Q

For all molars, are the crowns longer in a buccal-lingual or cervical-occlusal direction?

A

All are wider in the B-L direction. Remember also wider M-D than O-C

19
Q

For the maxillary first molar, why is the DB root hidden from site from the mesial view?

A

Because the MB root is slightly taller and very wide in the L-B direction.

20
Q

For the maxillary first molar, which cusp is taller, MB or ML?

A

MB; ML cusp is the largest overall, however, slightly shorter than MB cusp

21
Q

For the maxillary first molar, what is said to be the shape of the palatal root as seen from a proximal view?

A

Banana shape b/c it flares to the lingual

22
Q

For the maxillary first molar, what is the crown shape as seen from the occlusal view?

A

Rhomboid or a parallelogram

23
Q

For the maxillary first molar, describe the facial and lingual outlines as seen from the occlusal view?

A

Buccal outline: Convex; MB cusp most prominent

Lingual outline: Convex; no taper to lingual; L usually wider M-D than B; may have cusp of carabelli

24
Q

For all maxillary molars, is the B-L or M-D dimension longer?

A

The B-L dimension is longer in maxillary mollars (especially on the mesial side).

25
Q

For the maxillary first molar, rank the size of the 5 cuspos of the maxillary first mollar.

A

ML>MB>DB>DL>cusp of carabelli

26
Q

For the maxillary first molar, what are the 5 grooves found on teh occlusal table?

A

Central, facial (buccal), Distolingual, lingual, Transverse groove of the oblique ridge

27
Q

For all molars, what are the 3 fossa present on the occlusal table?

A

Mesial, distal, and central
