maturity onset diabetes / latent autoimmune diabetes of adult Flashcards
what is Maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY)
INHERITED MONOGENIC ( not changed by lifestyle factors) genetic disorders affecting the production of insulin.
Results in patients less than 25 developing symptoms similar to those with T2DM
what is latent autoimmune diabetes of adults ?
autoimmune-related diabetes present younger in life.
however a small group of patients who develop such problems later in life.
What is the inheritance pattern of MODY ?
Autosomal dominant
Family history is often present
Most common is // MODY-3 (HNA1 gene mutation ) //
Clinical features of MODY
Mild non ketogenic hyperglycaemia detected on routine analysis
Unlike type 2 diabetes they have a normal weight
====
Depends on type of MODY
MODY1 - progressive hyperglycaemia and at risk of retinopathy and nephropathy
MODY2 - rarely develop severe comoolications
like MODY3
Stable fasting hyperglycaemia
Diagnosis of MODY ?
Genetic testing - however exeoensive
If she is below 25 and having non ketogenic hyperglycaemia
Negative to anti islet antibodies
Anti GAD antibodies
Anti insulin antibodies
Treatment of MODY
mody type 1 = respond well to sulfonylurea
Depending on the MODY type
MODY type 2- no intervention needed
Type 3 - responds well to SULFONYLUREA (gliclazide / gliMpizide)

clinical features of latent autoimmune diabetes of adults ?
polyurea , polydipsia
In contrast to type 2 diabetes, patients are typically younger and without an increased body habitus.
In contrast to type 1 diabetes, insulin is not usually required in the early stages of the disease
