Matter Flashcards
What is Matter?
In classical physics and general chemistry, matter is any substance that has mass and takes up space by having volume.
What are the states of Matter?
Solids, Liquids, and Gases.
What are the Changes of State?
A change of state is a physical change in a matter. They are reversible changes and do not involve any changes in the chemical makeup of the matter. Common changes of the state include melting, freezing, sublimation, deposition, condensation, and vaporization.
What are physical properties of Matter?
color, hardness, malleability, solubility, electrical conductivity, density, melting point, and boiling point.
What are chemical properties of Matter?
Reactivity, flammability, and the ability to rust are among them.
What are pure substances?
substances that are made up of only one kind of particle and have a fixed or constant structure.
What are elements?
A basic part of a whole. In chemistry, refers to a simple substance that cannot be broken down into smaller parts or changed into another substance.
What are compounds?
something formed by a union of elements or parts.
What are Mixtures?
a physical combination of two or more substances that aren’t chemically joined.
What is a mechanical mixture?
When different kinds of matter are visible in the mixture.
What is a solution?
a type of mixture involving two or more substances.
What is suspension?
a mixture where a solid particle does not dissolve in a liquid solution.
What is a colloid?
A mixture in which very small particles of one substance are distributed evenly throughout another substance.
What is evidence of physical changes in matter?
those in which the shape, size, or state of the matter changes, but the substance is still essentially the same. For example, chopping up a carrot or ice melting into water are both physical changes.
What is evidence of chemical changes in matter?
change in color, energy change (temperature change or light produced), gas production, something burning, and the formation of a precipitate.
