Mathsy Biology Stuff :( Flashcards
What is the equation for total magnification?
Total Magnification = magnification of eyepiece x magnification of objective lens
How does a light microscope work?
Focused glass lenses, image made with light
How does an electron microscope work?
Using beams of electrons
SEM scan surface
TEM penetrate a sample
Pros and cons of light microscopes
Pros
- Portable
- Can use living specimens
- more affordable
- most people can use it
- in colour
Cons
- Lower resolution
- Lower magnification
- can’t see organelles
Pros and cons of election microscopes
Pros
- High magnification
- High resolution
Cons
- Not portable
- Cells must be dead
- More expensive
- Need extensive training to use it
What do order of magnitude 1 and 3 mean
Order of magnitude 1: something is 10x bigger
Order of magnitude 3: something is 101010x bigger (1000x bigger)
What is Quantitative data?
Numerical data
- can be repeated as it does not vary from person to person
What is Qualitative data?
Non numerical data
- not always reliable as it varies from person to person, repeats can’t be used
