Math- Quadratics Flashcards
What is the quadratic form
f(x)=ax^2 + bx +c
What are roots?
Roots are the solutions and x-intercepts
What does the sum of the roots equal
Sum = -b/a
What does the product of the roots equal
Product= c/a
What is the vertex
The midpoint of the parabola- it is always the maximum or minimum of the parabola
What does the x coordinate of the vertex equal
the midpoint of the roots
Vertex form
y = a(x - h)^2 + k
How to change from standard form to vertex form? (Completing the square)
First take the middle term and divide by 2. Then put it in the parentheses with x. Subtract the square of that number in the end aka the original b term. (h,k) is the vertex coordinates.
What is the discriminant
b^2 - 4ac
When the discriminant is more than zero, there is two real solutions. When the discriminant is zero there is one real solution. When the discriminant is less than zero, there are no real solutions.
Quadratic formula
x = (-b plus or minus the square root of b^2 - 4ac) / (2a)
