Maternal Deprivation Flashcards
Bowlby’s Hypothesis
Refers to the separation from an attached figure, loss of one or failure to develop attachment to any figure
Consequences of maternal deprivation
. Inability to form attachments in future
. Affectionless psychopathy (inability to feel remorse)
. Delinquency / behavioural problems in adolescence
Bowlby Juvenile Thieves Study
44 thieves compares with 44 non - thieves from a delinquency centre
^ collected results via interviews / questionnaires
Results:
. 17/44 thieves experienced early prolonged separation from their mother before 5yrs
. 2/44 non-thieves had experienced such separation
Evaluation
Practical Application = thieves study shows importance of positive attachment experiences and maintaining monotropic bond in first 5yrs
Investigator Effects = Bowlby designed and conducted self - reports himself, as a result his presence and interpretations may have influenced results
Oversimplified Concept = some argue Bowlby failed to distinguish between separation from attachment figure, loss of attachment figure and complete lack of attachment
