Cultural Variations Flashcards
Van Ijzendoorn study of cultural variations
He compared rates of attachment type in 8 countries
Procedure of Van Ijzendoorn’s study
Analysed data from other studies (meta analysis). All studies:
- used strange situation
- observed only mother - infant pairs
- classifies infants into 1 attachment type
- studies excluded any identifying special groups of children
Findings of Van Ijzendoorn
Secure most popular
Germany = most avoidant
UK = most secure
Conclusions of study
Overall consistency in secure attachment types leads to the conclusion that there may be universal characteristics that underpin and caregiver interactions
Evaluation
Ethnocentric = using SS judges/categorises infant behaviour according to behavioural categories based on MC American infants
Not representative = not equal amount of studies in each country and not all countries represented
High Reliability = Use of SS as a procedure means that a comparison can be made across cultures
