Bowlby's Explanation of Attachment Flashcards
Proximity Seeking Behaviour
Suggests attachment is a vital quality that has evolved to increase the chance of survival
Bowlbys theory of attachment
Attachment is a mutually innate in both infants and adults, with infants using social releasers to promote interaction (E.g: smiling/eye contact)
^ need to be innate to ensure infants can maintain close contact with parents
. Parents need to be responsive
Internal Working Model
Provides templates for future attachments
^ Plays role in later development known as the continuity hypothesis
Monotropic Bond
Infants require special bond to develop an internal working model
^ helps to maintain proximity between the parent and infant, offers infant to develop skills and an understanding of how to attach the bond to others
Evaluation
Research support = Animal studies
- Ghana tribe - infants form 1 primary attachment even when reared by multiple carers
Some psychologists argue a stable network of adults can provide adequate/better care than a mother who has to meet all a childs needs
