Maternal Deprivation Flashcards
maternal deprivation
the emotional and intellectual consequences of separation of a child from their mother/’mother-figure’
effects of maternal deprivation
Mental disability
increased Aggression
Delinquency
Depression
Affectionless psychopathy
Affectionless psychopathy
inability to have deep feelings for others and consequent lack of meaningful relationships
critical period (MDT)
first 2.5 yrs of life critical for psychological development during which deprivation would cause psychological damage
continued risk until 5yrs
privation
when a child never forms an attachment with the mother/’mother-figure’ in the first place
findings and conclusions of Bowlby’s 44 Thieves
86% of thieves who showed AP had been separated from their mother in the first 2 years
suggests disruption of attachment may have long-term -ve effects and may cause AP
Maternal deprivation evaluation
thieves cause replication of private psychopaths
Lewis study
partial replication of Bowlby’s 44 thieves with 500 young people
found prolonged deprivation did not predict later criminality or emotional disturbance
What did Rutter criticise Bowlby’s research for?
argued that it failed to distinguish between effects of deprivation and privation. said privation effects more serious and long lasting and this may have been what Bowlby studied, not deprivation
