Influence of Attachments Flashcards
Influence of attachments evaluation
Bullies continue quizzes on Bowlby and correlations
Sroufe et al. findings
link between early attachment type and later social competence
those classified as secure = less isolated, more popular with peers and more empathetic as older children
Myron-Watson and Smith
assessment and findings
assessed attachment type and bullying behaviour
secure = unlikely involved in bullying
avoidant = most likely victim of bullying
resistant = most likely the bullies
Hazan and Shaver procedure
published a ‘love’ quiz in a newspaper to gather information about early attachment experiences
analysed 205 male responses and 415 female response (620 total)
Hazan and Shaver findings
secure = tended to have happy, longer lasting relationships as adults–> believed love enduring and based on mutual trust
insecure = found relationships harder, more likely to divorce and have shorter relationships –> felt true love was rare
what is one weakness of research into influence of early attachments?
it is mostly correlational:
c/e cannot be est. so can’t say early attachment causes later relationship behaviours, just that there is a link between them
other factors may influence later relationships that aren’t considered, e.g. childhood experience or previous relationships
what is a strength of (some) research into early attachments?
some research supports Bowlby’s theory of the IWM and how our early attachments with our PAF can’t influence our later relationships.
