What is maternal mortality?
Death of women while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy
Any cause aggravated by pregnancy or its management
Wat is maternal morbidity?
Severe health complications occurring in pregnancy and delivery not resulting in death
What is the maternal mortality ratio?
Number of maternal deaths during a given time period per 100000 live births
What is the lifetime risk of maternal death?
Probability of maternal death during a women’s reproductive life
What is the maternal mortality ratio used for?
Risk associated with each pregnancy
What is the maternal mortality rate used for?
Takes into account not only obstetric risk but also frequency with which women are exposed to that risk
What is lifetime risk of maternal death used for?
Women’s chance of becoming pregnancy as well as dying in pregnancy
Why do mother’s die?
Direct - obstetric complications or from treatment received
Indirect - disorder which is exacerbated by pregnancy like malaria

What are the main causes of maternal deaths worldwide?
Indirect, haemorrhage, sepsis, hypertensive disorder, obstructed labour, unsafe abortion and others
How can maternal mortality be prevented?
Antenatal care - 4 visits, monitor weight, BP, proteinuria, folic acid, malaria and prophylaxis

What is the definition of a stillbirth?
Birth of a dead baby after 20/ 24 /28 weeks of gestation or weighing more than 500g
What is an early and later neonatal death?
Early - death of a baby within first week of life
Late - death of baby within first 38 days of life
What are the main causes of perinatal death?
Missing, congenital anomaly, cord, foetal, infection, intrapartum, maternal, placenta, neonatal and termination
What is essential new born care?
Ensure baby is breathing
Start exclusive breastfeeding straight away
Washing baby warm
Washing hands before touching baby
