What is mastitis?
Inflammation of the breast parenchyma often caused by Staph. aureus
What are the clinical features of mastitis?
Tender, firm, swollen, erythematous breast (generally unilateral)
Pain during breastfeeding
Reduced milk secretion
Flu-like symptoms, malaise, fever, and chills
How is mastitis diagnosed?
(Clinical diagnosis)
Breast milk culture if no response to treatment
What is the treatment for mastitis?
(Continue breastfeeding)
(Antiobiotics) Flucloxacillin for 10-14 days
What is a breast abscess?
encapsulated accumulation of pus within the breast tissue, often a complication of mastitis
What are the clinical features of breast abscess?
Breast pain, erythema, and edema Purulent discharge from the nipple of the affected breast Fever Nausea Fluctuating mass on palpation
What is the treatment for breast abscess?
Incision and drainage
(Less than 5 cm) Needle aspiration
