- Assists venous flow: results in decreasing venous pressure; provides a favorable situation for increased arterial contraction
- Assists lymphatic flow: massage can encourage lymphatic flow, preventing the edema that often occurs within activity.
- Stretches superficial tissues: encourage the patient to relax and allow further passive stretching of a muscle.
- Loosens scar tissue: friction should be used.
