Massage Techniques Flashcards
Range of Motion
The range through which the bones in a joint should move
Centripetal
Towards the center/heart
Excursion
Distance that is traveled during the length of a stroke
Ballistic Stretch
Fast, bouncing type stretch that is avoided in massage
Intension
Consciously sought goal that defines the purpose of the session
Continuity
Uninterrupted flow of strokes and the unbroken transition between one movement to the next
Benefits of Vibration
- relieve sinus congestion,
- stimulate muscle spindles
NOT BENEFIT: creating length in a muscle
Benefits of Effleurage
- preps client for deeper strokes,
- aids relief in insomnia,
- creates length in muscle
Does NOT: lift muscle belly away from body
Benefits of Percussion(Tapotement)
- aids in de congestion of the lungs,
- stimulate nerve endings,
- desensitized sensitive tissues
DOES NOT: free restricted muscles by breaking up adhesions
Compression
Rhythmic pumping on the muscle belly
Friction
DTF, DCF, cross fiber
Vibration
Rapid shaking and trembling
Stretching
Extending muscle tissue to full length
Percussion
Hacking, tapping, cupping
Effleurage
Warms muscle and prepares client for deep tissue
Petrissage
Milking , fulling, kneading, jostling
(T/F) Tapotement breaks down and coaxes apart adhered tissue, freeing restricted areas
False
(T/F) When applying pressure, it is important to cause muscle contractions, not muscle relaxation
False
(T/F) The three basic moves of vibration are fine, coarse, and rocking
False
(T/F) Massage strokes delivered too quickly may alarm client and cause a tensing reaction
True
(T/F) You should not use heavy percussive movements over kidney area
True
Friction
An excellent stroke to break up adhesions
Active/Assisted Stretching
Stretching that is a combined effort between client and therapist
Explain PNF
(Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) A combination of isometric and passive stretching that reeducates the mind and body to relax for the purpose of increasing flexibility, range of motion, strengthen weak muscles, reduces tight muscles, and lengthens fascia.
When to NOT apply joint mobilization
- bad arthritis (inflammation)
- surgical replacements
- scoliosis
Endangerment Site
An area that is negatively impacted by a massage
Examples: behind knee, Axillary, popliteal, brachial plexus, kidney area, coroted artery, vericos veins
Why are you only interested in stimulating Golgi tendon organs and NOT muscle spindles during a static stretch?
- Golgi tendon organs allow muscle to perform and detect slow static muscle movements.
- Spindles respond buy contracting when stimulated by fast bouncy movements
What is the appropriate sequence when doing a PNF?
- Bring muscle to end field
- Client push against you with 30% of strength
- Take 2 deep breaths while pushing
- Relax pressure on 2nd breath
- Bring muscle to new end field and hold 8-10 seconds
