Massage Flashcards
Indications
Muscular tightness
Muscular spasms
Contraindications
- Skin infections of viral fungal or bacterial origin
- Open wounds massage can damage to healing tissue and restart bleeding and cause infection
- Circulatory problems can be adversely affected by massage increasing bloodflow manipulating blood vessels haemophilia arteriosclerosis haemorrhage thrombosis deep vein thrombosis
- Recent injury if massage to early in the healing process will cause further damage will cause trauma to the fragile healing tissue leading to delay in repair and further bleeding which could cause scarring 48 hours after injury
- Tumours can be mechanically stimulated by massage which speeds up metabolism and spreads tumour don’t massage directly over tumour
- Acute inflammation as inflammatory process can be increased by the effects produced
- Diabetes peripheral circulation affected blood vessels easily damaged
- Respiratory problems
Long stroking
Gets patient used to touch
Allows assessment of the state of skin and tissues of the area treated
Improve sensory and analgesia
Relax sedates and decrease muscle tone
Faster/stimulate superficial blood through accelerate lymph drainage
Start and end of session
Thousands hands
See stroking
Effleurage
Assist lymphatic and Venus return
Assists interchange of tissue fluids
Assists removal of waste products and chemical irritants
Passively stretches muscle fibres
Restores mobility at tissue interfaces
Light strokes decrease muscle tone
Deep strokes increase muscle tone
Start and in between other manipulations
Palmer kneading
Stimulate Spinis and lymphatic flow
Increases mobility of fibrous tissue
Helps interchange of tissue fluid
Helps repair soft tissue for exercise
How to remove waste products
Increases length and strength of connective tissue
Restores mobility between tissue into pieces
Double handed kneading
Stimulate Spinis and lymphatic flow
Increases mobility of fibrous tissue
Helps interchange of tissue fluid
Helps repair soft tissue for exercise
How to remove waste products
Increases length and strength of connective tissue
Restores mobility between tissue into pieces
Reinforces kneading
Stimulate Spinis and lymphatic flow
Increases mobility of fibrous tissue
Helps interchange of tissue fluid
Helps repair soft tissue for exercise
How to remove waste products
Increases length and strength of connective tissue
Restores mobility between tissue into pieces
Finger kneading
Fibrous nodules
Skin rolling
Same as kneading
Mobilise the scar tissue
When performed slowly it has a stretch affect on the tissue being manipulated
Hacking
Stimulates local circulation
Stimulate muscle tone
Gives generally revised feeling of stimulation
Provokes muscle and tendon reflexes
Light strokes affect superficial tissues
Deeper strokes aid evacuation of the lungs
Clapping
Same as hacking
