Q

difference between weight and mass

A

mass will be the same anywhere in the universe.

weight will change depending on the gravitational field strength. weight is a force, mass is not.

Q

what would happen if two astronauts were playing football on the moon?

A

it would be just as difficult to halt a tackle by one of them as it would be on earth, and any collisions would hurt just as much

this is because the mass of an object resists any change in motion of the object, and the mass of the astronaut is the same on earth and the moon

Q

how do you weigh something using a spring balance?

A

the top of the spring is hung from the hook and the spring is stretched by the weight of the pan attatched to its lower end

when a known mass is placed in the pan, the spring stretches further due to the extra weight and the new pointer position can be marked

Q

what would happen if a spring balance reading 30N was moved to the moon?

A

the weight would be less and the spring would stretch less far. it would indicate a weight of 4.8 N
