Feminists say family supports the patriarchy as men and women have different roles. Functionalists say family doesn’t socialise children into capitalism.
What do advertisers do with the family?
They urge families to ‘keep up with the Joneses’ by consuming all the latest products.
Who do the media target ?
They target children who uses ‘pester power’ to persuade their parents to spend.
Which children are mocked?
The children who may not have the latest gadgets or clothes are mocked by those who do have them.
EVALUATION: what do Functionalists say about consumption? what would this lead to?
They the unit of consumption is vital to success. Without these manufacturing jobs or products it will lead to many families not having the breadwinner job.
What does the family perform?
A ‘haven’ from the harsh and exploitive world of capitalism.
What do the ruling class require women to do?
They require women to take the stresses and frustration of the working men
What is BOGOF?
(Buy one get one free) - so 1 worker who earns money and 1 worker who does all the domestic work.
EVALUATION: what do radical and liberal feminists say?
Radical feminist say that the family serves the man instead of capitalism. Liberal feminists say there’s been many legal and societal changes that benefit women now
How does the family reproduce the labour force?
They create more workers to help the bourgeoisie create profits. So they are wage slaves who are exploited in capitalism.

It stabilises adult personalities

The nuclear family arose when societies started to value the private property
What does Engels say about monogamous marriage and who affects this?
Engels say that monogamous marriage became essential due to the inheritance of the property and the promiscuous horde effects this.
