Marshal, Truman, The Blockade And Stalin Flashcards
Truman doctrine
1947
Policy known as containment
Due to the fear of communism spreading, Truman declared that the USA whole help any “free nation” from an invasion by a bigger power
Marshal aid plan
President Truman and General Marshal gave European countries over $17B in order to help them recover from the war
Comminform countries in the USSRs sphere of influence were banned from taking any of the money
The trade off was that any country who agreed to take the money would have to trade with the USA
Berlin Blockade
1948
The day after trizonia formed, Stalin cut off all rail and road fed supplies to east Berlin in the hopes of starving the west out of Berlin, leaving it all to Stalin
This lasted 10 months before Stalin realised that the USAs airlift could outlast the blockade
These events showed the USSR up as the bad guys in the propaganda war and also showed that the USA were the more superior superpower
Berlin Airlift
1948
America’s response to Stalin’s blockade
Was important to win the first major confrontation between the powers
275,000 flights made carrying over 2,000,000 tons of supplies to West Berlin.
It proved the USAs superiority and was a defeat for Stalin
As a result of this, NATO was formed
Formation of NATO - 1949
An attack against any of them would be an attach against all.
1955 - Warsaw Pact
Treaty of friends. Same principle as NATO. Keeps members in line. Rebellions (Czech and Hungary)
