1968 - Reformers
We’re taking over. Brezhnev flew to Prague to meet the new leader of Czech, Dubchek. Brezhnev accepted that some change was inevitable.
1968 - Dubchek’s reforms
We’re shocking the rest of the soviets. Thought they could bring communism up to date. A human face. They would lead by choice. Ending of censorship. Revealing Stalin’s crimes. Everyone is happier
Soviet’s mad and shocked at reforms
Scared communists would lose power. Dubchek might change sides
Soviets response 1968
Public displays of power in Czech. Threats from Moscow still didn’t make Dubchek leave. Invaded and removed Dubchek. Dubchek says don’t retaliate. Reforms undone
Soviet invasion
Soviet parachuters seize Czechs air ports. Soviet and Warsaw armies burst through Czech frontiers. Czech leaders are meeting in Prague. Soviet tanks take over central Prague.
