Khrushchev’s secret speech got out and the people began getting excited for a change
Due to civil unrest and riots, the violent Rakosi was replaced by Imre Nagy

Nagy’s reforms
A
Nagy’s reforms went too far however. He wanted western style democratic elections
He wanted Hungary to leave to Warsaw Pact
He asked for the UNs protection against the USSR

The response
A
Khrushchev responded by sending 5,000 tanks and 200,000 troops to crush the rebellion
The people fought back however, leading to over 20,000 dead Hungarians
