What are the rules concerned with discharge of oily water? “Uncontrolled water in machinery space = Bilge Water”
Outside special areas 1. En-route 2. Oil filtering equipment with alarm 3. Not more than 15 ppm Inside special areas1. Same as above but in addition the oil filtering equipment must have an automatic shut off
MARPOL ANNEX 4 “SEWAGE”Who does it apply to?What certificate is issued and how long does it last? What three types of sewage treatment are there and when can they be discharged? What are the special areas concerning sewage?
- Vessels 400GT or > 15 people - ISPPC - Valid for 5 years, no annual inspections - Full Sewage treatment plant: discharge anytime and where - Disinfected and comminuted plant: en route, 3nm from land - Holding Tanks: en route, 12nm miles from land, 4 knots min, no floaters, moderate rate - Special Areas - Only Baltic Sea, and only for Passenger Ships- NE Australia - Control discharges of 2 and 3, outside the Great Barrier Reef.

No certification…. BUT- All vessels >100 GT or 15 persons or more - Garbage management plan: I.C (Normally Chief Officer) + Collection + Segregation + Storage + Disposal - All vessels over 400GT to have a garbage record book - Any vessel over 13m needs to display a garbage placard

- Seas + Red + Med + Black + Baltic + North Seas - Gulf of Aden - Persian Gulf - Antarctica - Wider Caribbean
MARPOL - Annex 6 - Air Pollution Who does it apply to?What certificate is issued and how long does it last? What other documentation is required? What are the Max Sulphur contents?
- All vessels > 400GT or less than 400GT but greater than 130 KW - IAPPC = Valid for 5 years / Annual inspection - Nox - Clean Combustion - Sox - Sulphur in Fuel - Max Sulphur content: Worldwide: 3.5%S / ECA (Emission Control Area) 0.1%S- ECA - Emission Control Area (Special Areas)= Baltic and North Sea, English Channel, North America, Parts of the Caribbean. - EU Directive - When in port. >2 hours; only 0.1% fuel to be burnt - Ships over 400GT Must have SEEMP, normally found in vessels SMS- Vessel will be issued a IEEC (International Energy Efficiency Certificate) - Full term with SEEMP in place.
MARPOL - What are the contents and requirements for the oil record book?
- Has 4 Columns: + Date / Code Letter / Item Number / Narrative + Code letter and Item Number tells you what to put in the narrative section - Kept onboard for 3 years after last entry - IMO recommends a weekly entry of the sludge retained onboard- After an entry, the OIC must sign and the next entry goes on the next free line. Do not leave spare lines- Master to sign the bottom of each page
What is the purpose of a SOPEP plan (Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan)_ ANNEX 1 MARPOL
- The SOPEP is to be seen as information from the owner to the master of a particular ship - It shall advise the master on how to correctly react in case of an oil spill in order to prevent or at least mitigate negative effects on the environment - The plan contains operational aspects for various oil spill scenarios and lists communication information to be used in case of such incidents - It is compulsory for all ships of >400GT (Oil tankers of >150GT) to carry SOPEP onboard

- MARPOL Annex I : + only requires a SOPEP plan which is to be approved by flag state + The flag state decides on what equipment is suitable for your vessel and will state this.
