What are the two main types of anchors used on larger ships?
The stockless anchor and the Admiralty cast anchor
What is a stockless anchor constructed from?
A commonly used anchor consisting of a cast steel anchor head and cast steel or forged iron shank
Describe a stockless anchors characteristics
The head of the anchor is secured to the shank by a hinged bolt allowing the arms to form an angle of upto 45 degrees with the shank.
Describe a admiralty cast anchors characteristics
Used commonly on large merchant vessels, the anchor consists of a fluke area which can operate on an angle of upto 35 degrees. Possible due to the large holding pin passing through the head.
Which anchors must be weight tested?
All anchors over 76kg. For stockless, include shackle. For stocked, include shackle if any but exclude stock.
What marks must and anchor possess and where?
The makers name and initals + progressive number and weight + certification number and letters indicating authority.
How many metres is one shackle of cable?
27.5m
