MARINE SHORES (INTERTIDAL ZONE) Flashcards
Battered by the the full force of ocean waves
Marine shores (intertidal zone)
Supports very diff. organisms that those found along sheltered shores
Exposed shores
On the inside of headlands or in coves and bays
Sheltered shores
4 types of shores
- Exposed shores
- Sheltered shores
- Sandy shores
- Rocky shores
Vertical zones (5)
- Supratidal fringe
- Upper Intertidal zone
- Middle Intertidal zone
- Lower Intertidal zone
- Subtidal zone
Highest zone. Seldom covered by high tides but often wetted by waves.
Supratidal fringe
Covered only during the highest tide
Upper Intertidal Zone
Between the upper and lower intertidal zone
Middle intertidal zone
Uncovered only during the lowest tide
Lower intertidal zone
Below the intertidal zone. Remains covered by water even during the lowest tides
Subtidal zone
At high tides , it reduces light intensity. At low tides, intertidal organisms are exposed to the full intensity of the sun.
Water Turbulence
Reduces light intensity
Water Turbulence at High Tide
intertidal organisms are exposed to the full intensity of the sun.
Water Turbulence at Low Tide
Are small basins that retain water at low tide.
Tide Pools
Are the two most important water movements affecting the distribution and abundance of intertidal organisms..
