Which structures does the vagina extend to and from?
Vagina runs from posterior fornix (horn) to the vestibule of the vagina (entrance)
What does the vestibule contain?
Both vagina, external urethral orifices, and the opening of the two greater vestibular glands
Which structure is found at the superior end of the vagina?
Cervix
What is the term for the recess around the protruding cervix?
Vagina fornix
What are the parts of the fornix? Which part is the deepest and related to the recto-uterine pouch?
- Anterior
- Posterior = Deepest and related to the recto-uterine pouch
- Lateral
What are the four muscles which compress the vagina and act like sphincters?
- Pubovaginalis
- External Urethral Sphincter
- Urethrovaginal Sphincter
- Bulbospongiosus
Which vessels supply which parts of the vagina?
Superior part is supplied by branches of the uterine arteries
Middle/Inferior part is supplied by the vaginal artery
- Also, the internal pudendal artery
Describe the venous drainage of the vagina.
Vaginal venous plexus -> uterine venous plexus -> uterovaginal plexus -> uterine vein internal iliac vein
Which parts of the vagina drain into which lymph nodes?
- Superior part is drained by internal and external iliac lymph nodes
- Middle part is drained by the internal iliac lymph nodes
- Inferior part is drained by the sacral and common iliac lymph nodes
- Superficial inguinal lymph node
What is the normal position of the uterus?
Uterus is anteverted and anteflexed
What is the rounded part of the uterus called?
Fundus
What are the two parts of the cervix and where are they found?
1) Supravaginal part between the isthmus and the vagina
2) Vaginal part
What are the layers of the wall of the uterus? Which one is the outer serous coat? Which one is the muscular coat? Which one is the inner mucous coat? Which one contains blood vessels and nerves?
Layers of the wall
1) Perimetrium (outer serious coat)
2) Myometrium (muscular coat)
3) Endometrium (inner mucous coat)
- Outer serious coat = Perimetrium
- Blood vessels & Nerves = Myometrium layer
What is the attachment of the ligament of the ovary?
Ligament of ovary runs from the ovary and attaches postero-inferior to the utero-tubal junction
What is the attachment of the round ligament of the uterus?
Attaches antero-inferior to utero-tubal junction
Describe the broad ligament of the uterus and where it extends two and from? What is the superolateral projection of the broad ligament?
- “Vacuum sealing” the reproductive organs
- Double layer of peritoneum
- Extends from sides of uterus to the lateral walls and floor of the pelvis
In which ligament are the ovarian vessels found?
Broad ligament
