Lecture 2 (Feb 14) Flashcards
What is the parasympathetic supply of the esophagus?
Right and left vagus nerves
” What is the sympathetic supply of the esophagus including splanchnic nerve and plexus?
o Thoracic sympathetic trunks via the greater (abdominopelvic) splanchnic nerves
” The mixed sympathetic and parasympathetic supply is around the periarterial plexus. Which arteries are involved in this periarterial plexus around the esophagus?
o Left gastric artery
o Left inferior phrenic artery
” What is the parasympathetic supply of the stomach?
o Anterior vagal trunk (mainly left vagus nerve)
o Larger posterior vagal trunk
” What is the sympathetic supply of the stomach including splanchnic nerve and plexus?
o Occurs from the T6-T9 segments of the spinal cord
o Passes to celiac plexus via greater splanchnic nerves
o Distributed as plexuses around the gastric and gastro-omental arteries
” The mixed sympathetic and parasympathetic supply is around the periarterial plexus. Which arteries are involved in this periarterial plexus around the stomach?
o Gastric and gastromomental arteries
” Which artery provides the blood supply to the jejunum? Explain in terms of arterial arcades and vasa recta and straight arteries.
o Supply í Superior mesenteric artery (SMA)
o Arterial Arcades (loops) í Vasa recta come directly off here then the straight arteries branch off the vasa recta
” Which vein drains the jejunum and ileum?
o Drainage í Superior mesenteric vein (SMV)
Describe the relationship of the superior mesenteric vein, splenic vein and hepatic portal vein.
The superior mesenteric vein
and splenic vein join with the inferior mesenteric vein to drain into the hepatic portal
” Describe the lacteals and indicate what they absorb.
o Lacteals í Lymphatic capillaries
o Absorb í Receive all absorbed fat (chyle) from the intestine and convey it through the thoracic duct to the venous system
” What is the sympathetic nervous supply of the jejunum and ileum including the splanchnic nerves, ganglia and plexuses?
Greater splanchnic nerve and celiac plexus as well as lesser splanchnic nerve and superior mesenteric plexus
” What is the parasympathetic nerve supply? Where do the postsynaptic parasympathetic neurons synapse?
o Supply í Posterior vagal trunk
o Presynaptic parasympathetic fibers synapse with postsynaptic neurons in the myenteric and submucous plexuses in the intestinal wall
” The mixed sympathetic and parasympathetic supply is to which blood vessels (periarterial plexuses) of the jejunum and ileum?
Periarterial plexuses around the superior mesenteric artery
