What are the two Lensatic Compass Techniques?
➢ Compass to Cheek
■ Fold the cover of the compass containing the sighting wire to a vertical position; then fold the rear sight slightly forward. Look through the rear-sight slot and align the front-sight hairline with the desired object in the distance. Glance down at the dial through the eye lens to read the azimuth.
➢ Centerhold
■ To measure an azimuth, simply turn your entire body toward the object, pointing the compass cover directly at the object. Once you are pointing at the object, look down and read the azimuth from beneath the fixed black index line
What is an azimuth?
A horizontal angle measured clockwise from a north base line
How do you shoot a back azimuth?
➢ Add 180 degrees to original azimuth if less then 180
➢ Subtract 180 degrees to original azimuth if more than 180
What are the major terrain features?
Hill, Valley, Saddle, Ridge, and Depression
What are the minor terrain features?
Draw, Cliff, and Spur
What are the supplementary terrain features?
Cut and Fill
How do you orient a map?
By using a compass; Set north at your index line, then check your local declination adjust. Line up your compass with a north-south line on the map, then turn the map until the magnetic needle is inside the orienteering arrow
