Indications for MAOIs?
A
Rarely used; only in its unresponsive to other drugs/ECT

MAOI MOA?
A
Irreversibly inhibits MAO-A and MAO-B in nerve terminals.
- MAO-A: metabolizes NE, 5HT, tyramine
- MAO-B: metabolizes DA

PK of MAOI?
A
- Acetylators (susceptible to pharmacogenomics)
- Long duration of drug effects

Clinical effects of MAOIs?
A
Acute: CNS stimulation & euphoria
Chronic: clinical symptoms improve but CNS stimulation remains

Drug drug interactions?
A
- Tyramine (Cheese).. Watch out for depressed person at a wine & cheese party –> sudden malignant HTN
- Meperidine/Dextromehorphan: high temp, delirium, death
- SSRI, Cocaine

ADE of MAOI? (4)
A
- Decreased sleep
- Orthostatic hypotension
- Weight gain
- Sexual dysfunction
