Anti-Psychotics: Typical Flashcards
What is responsible for the positive symptoms of psychosis?
Dopamine
Whats responsible for the neg symptoms of psychosis?
Serotonin
What are the typical anti psychs? (1st gen)
- Phenothiazines: Chlorpromazine, Fluphenazine
- Thioxanthenes: Thiothixene
- Diphenylbutylpiperidines: Haloperidol
MOA of typicals?
- D2 receptor antagonists –> decrease positive symptoms
- Secondary anti-D2 effect: increase prolactin
- Anti-cholinergic: decrease EPS
What is Chlorpromazine’s unique structural feature?
Aliphatic side chain –> lower potency, less risk for EPS, more risk for anti-cholinergic
What is Thiothixene’s unique structural feature?
Piperidine side chain –> lower potency, lower risk for EPS, more risk for anti-cholinergic
Fluphenazine, Perphenazine unique structural features?
Piperazine group side chain –> higher potency, more risk for EPS, decreased risk for anti-cholinergic
Butyrophenones (Haloperidol) potency? EPS risk? Anticholinergic?
high, high, low
