Manufacturing/Industrial processes Flashcards
What is primary processing
Turning raw materials into useful standard stock sizes which are EASIER and CHEAPER to buy because parts are already made
What is secondary processing
Turning standard stock materials into components or products
What is casting and moulding
Pouring a liquid into a mould and waiting for it to take its shape
What is forming
Changing the shape and size of an object without changing its volume
What is wastage
Changing both shape and size of a material
What is conditioning
Changing the internal properties of a material
What is assembling
Joining two or more materials together
What is finishing
Applying a coating/design to the surface to the product
What is one off production
A single product is only made once for one particular use
What is just in time production
All components arrive at the factory when their needed. Cheaper factories are used eg restaurants
What is Batch production
A group of identical items made together in grouped quantities eg books electrics games etc
What is mass production
A product it made on a large line of sequences where each stage of production is responsible for adding a part onto the product eg cars
What is continuous production
Production of a product is done 24/7 for cheap prices eg oil
What is a jig
Used to make parts of a component that are exactly the same, by going into the material
What is a former
A piece of material bent over a template
What is a template
A cut out that can be drawn around or into
What is a pattern
A replica of a finished product that is also used to make a mould. They are used for shaping products in a vacuum forming machine
What is a mould
A hollow shape that can have a material placed into and take the shape of, used when making lots of one type of component
What is vacuum forming
Using a sheet of plastic that is heated to stretch over a mould which is then cooled
What is die Casting
Injecting molten material between two plates
What is extrusion
Forcing molten material through a template (a dye) to take its shape
What is injection moulding
Injecting molten material into a cut out
What is die cutting
A manufacturing technique using a segregated blade shaped as the thing you want to cut out is used to cut through a material whilst attached to a plywood base
What is blow moulding
Used to manufacture HOLLOW plastics a molten mould is placed on a parsion between two halves of the mould air is blown into the molten until it takes up both halves
What is rotational moulding
Another process to make a hollow object by putting molten material into a template that spins
