Manipulating Reproduction Flashcards
1
Q
Two types of manipulating reproduction
A
- Artificial insemination
- Aritificial pollination
2
Q
What is artificial insemination?
A
Refers to the artificial transfer of male sperm into female vagina to produce an offspring with favourable traits from each parent
3
Q
Artificial insemination process
A
- Sperm is collected
- Procedure is timed with ovulation
- Prepared sperm is placed into the uterus using catheter
- Sperm travel to the fallopian tube and fertillises egg
4
Q
What is artificial pollination?
A
Refers to the process of manually transferring pollen from one anther of one plant to the stigma of another.
5
Q
Process of artificial pollination
A
- Selection of Plants: Choose desirable parent plants based on traits like yield, disease resistance, or fruit quality.
- Flower Preparation: Identify flowers that are ready for pollination, usually at the correct stage of maturity.
- Pollen Collection: Collect pollen from the male flower of the selected plant using a brush, cotton swab, or by shaking the flower.
- Pollen Transfer: Transfer the collected pollen to the stigma of the female flower of another selected plant by gently brushing or placing it directly.
- Fertilization: If successful, the pollen germinates on the stigma, and the sperm travels down the style to fertilize the ovule, leading to seed development.
- Fruit/Seed Development: Monitor the flower as it develops into fruit or seed, ensuring proper care for optimal growth.
